Singapore Airlines to bring A380 to Zurich

January 16, 2010 |16:08 | Flights, Cruises, Trains  By : Team X

Singapore Airlines to bring A380 to ZurichSingapore Airlines will expand its Airbus A380 network this year when it deploys the aircraft on flights to Zurich.

Getting underway on 28 March, the new daily service will replace the existing 12 weekly flights between Singapore and Zurich operated by Boeing 777-300ER planes.

The Swiss city will be the third destination in Europe served by the carrier's A380 aircraft, joining London and Paris.

Singapore Airlines was the first commercial operator to use the superjumbo, launching flights to Sydney in October 2007 and subsequently adding services to Tokyo, Hong Kong and Melbourne. The company claimed that its A380 offers 'unsurpassed standards of luxury and sophistication in air travel'.

Qantas sees big cost savings in Jetstar alliance with AirAsia

January 6, 2010 |18:42 | Flights, Cruises, Trains  By : Team X

QANTAS has boasted that a strategic alliance between its budget offshoot, Jetstar, and the rival AirAsia aimed at slashing costs will eventually lead to even closer ties. Announcing the worst-kept secret in aviation yesterday, the airlines said the deal would include working together to gain better deals on the next generation of aircraft, sharing parts and ground handling services, and joint procurement of engineering and maintenance supplies.

Qantas's chief executive, Alan Joyce, said he expected the initial arrangements to be the first step towards closer ties between Jetstar and Asia's largest no-frills airline. 'This could develop very fast into revenue synergies [and] into code-sharing,'' he said. ''It's the foundation for bigger things … and makes Asia the big focus of the group.'' But Mr Joyce, who has shied away from the deal-making of his predecessor, emphasised that the airlines did not have any plans for an equity arrangement because ''they get a lot more complex and … this is cost and revenue focused''.

Qantas's attempts to form ties with AirAsia go back to 2003, when the Malaysian airline's Irish co-founder, Conor McCarthy, initiated talks between the two. The prospect of even closer ties poses the biggest threat to the Singapore Airlines-backed Tiger Airways, which continues to suffer large losses in Singapore and Australia, and last month announced plans to raise $200 million in an initial public offering.

Airlines get together in battle for Asian gateway

December 4, 2009 |17:26 | Flights, Cruises, Trains  By : Team X

The race to control the skies in Japan and the gateway to Asia went into overdrive yesterday as American Airlines raised its capital injection to offer Japan Airlines to $1.1 billion and All Nippon Airways solidified its alliance with United and Continental.

The move by the American carrier, which involved a sweetening of the offer last month, is expected to spark a bidding war for the right to code share on JAL’s many routes from Japan to the rest of Asia.  JAL has recorded significant losses as of late and is desperate to secure cash to renew its aging fleet.

The newly increased offer by American Airlines of capital, which it is mounting jointly with the private equity group TPG, would keep JAL locked into the Oneworld airline alliance, leaving Delta and SkyTeam allies without a Japanese partner.

Asian airlines start to recover

November 20, 2009 |11:46 | Flights, Cruises, Trains  By : Team X

Asia's airline industry is beginning to pull out of a severe slump sparked by the global recession with signs that passenger numbers have started to recover, a regional body said on Friday. "Hopefully, we are at least through the worst of the downturn," Andrew Herdman, director-general of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), told an industry forum in Singapore.

"There are some encouraging signs that air traffic is starting to recover." Figures released on Thursday by the 17-member AAPA showed its airlines carried 11.1 million passengers in October, a slight improvement over the previous month but still below levels seen a year ago.

Despite signs of a recovery, the regional airline industry is still expected to turn in a collective loss for 2009, Herdman said. He did not give a figure for the losses expected this year but said the industry lost $US4.8 billion ($A5.22 billion) in 2008.

Debate over airline trademark rekindled

November 3, 2009 |17:22 | Flights, Cruises, Trains  By : Team X

Low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific and Vietnam’s aviation authorities have locked horns again over a trademark that the airline has used since 2008. Local carrier Pacific Airlines was renamed Jetstar Pacific Airlines in May last year under a branding agreement with Jetstar Airways, which is a subsidiary of Australia-based Qantas Airlines.

Just one month later the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam warned Jetstar Pacific Airlines against using the “Jetstar” logo or “Jet” and a star image, saying these trademarks could cause people to confuse the Vietnamese airline with Australian carrier Jetstar Airways.

AirAsia building Asean airline imageDespite its extensive Southeast Asia coverage and a foray into China and India, the budget airline group AirAsia is strenuously expanding its network in Asean.

"I think we just scratched the surface. I think there are 100 (more) places (in Asean) where to grow," AirAsia group chief executive Tony Fernandes said on Saturday.

With a population of 600 million in the 10 Asean nations and their huge economic development, the region offers AirAsia "huge" opportunities to expand its network by introducing new routes and boosting frequencies on existing routes, the Malaysian executive noted.
