China Beach, Vietnam is listed in Top Ten of Asia's best beaches

Posted in : Vacations, Tourist Spots

(added 3 days ago)

AUSTRALIANS are royally spoiled when it comes to world-class coastlines. Yet still we travel, chasing sandier or sunnier shores. Here are 10 of the best beaches in Asia.

China Beach, Vietnam is listed in Top Ten of Asia's best beaches

1. SAUD BEACH, PHILIPPINES
On the northwest coast of Luzon, little-known Saud Beach at Pagudpud is a 2km arc of blindingly pure sand bordered by the blue of the South China Sea. It's like an uncluttered version of that famous Philippines shore, White Beach, on Boracay Island. Beat the developers, the hair-braiders and sarong-floggers - head to Pagudpud now.

2. KO ADANG, THAILAND
Thailand's far south Andaman Sea coast has clusters of islands that are still off the radar for tour group invaders and full-moon ravers. The towering rock formations and crystal waters of Ko Tarutao National Marine Park, a 51-island group about 30km off the mainland, are a reminder of how islands such as Phuket, Samui and Phi Phi once were. Here you'll find Ko Adang, a jungle island with pristine shores, empty beaches and not a beer bar in sight.

3. BENTOTA, SRI LANKA
At Bentota Beach, 60km south of Colombo, grand arcs of beach sweep north and south from a rocky promontory. The Indian Ocean massages this coast of granite headlands and uncrowded beaches that surfers and European sun-seekers discovered long ago. There is a choice of three, four and five-star resorts from which you can simultaneously contemplate Bentota's fiery sunset and your of sundowner.

4. YALONG BAY, CHINA
At the same latitude as Hawaii, Hainan is where mainland Chinese come to get that Waikiki feeling without leaving home. While Yalong Bay, near Sanya on Hainan's southern tip, may lack Polynesia's heaving surf and swaying skirts, its broad white beaches are better than many in Hawaii. Fishing villages and rice farms once rimmed Yalong Bay's 7km strand. In their place, quality resorts harvest the disposable incomes of China's leisure class.

5. CHINA BEACH, VIETNAM
China Beach, on Vietnam's central coast near Da Nang, is 30km long and has numerous resorts and restaurants, especially around Bai Non Nuoc. The specific section of the China Beach of Vietnam War and television series fame is known locally as Bai Tam My Khe. Here, you can see fishermen paddle out through its breaking waves in flimsy wicker coracles and then, after fishing, surf right back in again.

6. CALANGUTE, INDIA
"Christmas in Goa" was the mantra for heliotropic (and psychotropic) hippies on the 1970s "Overland Trail". Calangute's palm-fringed shoreline was annually invaded by some of the most upbeat and beat-up minds of their generation; today it is simply built-up. Over-development hasn't been kind to Calangute's little fishing hamlets, but its Arabian Sea full moons are as spellbinding as ever.

7. DUNGUN, MALAYSIA
The east coast of Malaysia is a sleeping secret. Macaque monkeys swing like tiny Tarzans through a tree canopy that borders the South China Sea. Beyond the trees, Dungun, an empty swoop of beach, is one of Malaysia's least-exploited shores. Offshore is Tenggol Island, part of Terengganu Marine Park, where you can snorkel and scuba dive amid gin-and-tonic clear waters alive with turtles, grouper, wrasse and jacks.

8. OCCHEUTEAL, CAMBODIA
Sihanoukville (aka Kompong Som) on Cambodia's pretty south coast is home to five fine beaches, even though the best one, Sokha, is reserved for a private hotel's guests. Sokha's neighbour, Occheuteal Beach, comes a close second with its long stretch of white sand lined with pine trees. Popular with Cambodians and travellers alike, Occheuteal's far northern end has become a backpacker hangout.

9. MAE NAM, THAILAND
Ko Samui's east coast strands are almost too well known. Head up to the north coast to snoozy Mae Nam, where the sands may be narrower, but you're not sharing them with the crowds. The water is clear and calm, the palm trees shady. In the distance you can see a flotilla of blue-grey islands that drifts just north of Samui, including Ko Phangan and Ang Thong Marine Park, where the beaches are truly empty.

10. KENTING, TAIWAN
The semi-tropical landscape of southern Taiwan is a surprise until you remember that the island's earlier Portuguese name, Formosa, means "beautiful". The name still fits. Unhurried and warm, Kenting, at the rugged southernmost tip of the island, has reasonable beaches for swimming, diving and surfing, plus an 18,000-ha national park. There is ample accommodation here, the seafood is excellent and, surprisingly, you're well inside the Tropic of Cancer.

Singapore: No. 1 Asian city due to successful planning, says Singapore company registration

Posted in : Traveling Info

(added 7 days ago)

In a speech made at the Urban Planning forum, Minister for National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan, pointed out the country's unique problem of small land mass and high population density as well as the government's efforts at identifying and prioritizing the challenges to tackle.

Singapore: No. 1 Asian city due to successful planning, says Singapore company registration

"The first priority is Resource Management. As a resource-scarce city-state, it is not surprising that a key focus for us is to enhance resource security. Land is a precious resource for us," said Mr Mah.

Mr Mah said a prime example could be seen in Marina Bay today. Built in reclaimed land from the sea 40 years ago, Marina Bay now hosts a Universal Studios theme park, a world-class casino, waterfront homes, the Marina Barrage, the Waterfront Promenade, and the Gardens by the Bay.

"We have evolved an integrated and long term land use planning system to ensure that we have enough land set aside for current needs, as well as to support future growth," said Mr Mah.

"Water is another key resource that is in short supply. To maximize the local catchment water, almost two-thirds of our island is used for water catchments; every single drop of rain which falls on these areas will flow through our network of drains, canals and rivers, and end up in our 17 reservoirs."

The water supply is further supplemented by imported water and desalinated water. The government has also invested heavily into membrane filtration technologies to recycle wastewater into drinkable water.

In addition, the government has also launched an Active, Beautiful and Clean Waters (ABC Waters) programme to turn water bodies into clean lakes and rivers that will service as recreational spaces for residents to inspire them to keep the water clean. While actively wooing industrialists to set up their companies in Singapore, the government also launched an Anti-Pollution Control Unit to keep the quality of air clean.

Through careful land planning, Singapore now has a zoning system in which industrial areas are separated from residential and recreation areas. Mr Mah said that another important priority is to provide quality living spaces for residents.

"In the 1960s, most of our population was living in slums and overcrowded dwellings, which lacked proper sanitation and were a fire hazard. To tackle this problem, we formed the Housing Development Board (HDB) to build large numbers of public flats," Mr Mah.

"These towns were planned as high-density estates that provide a total living environment for residents, with educational, social, recreation and community facilities. Then we added greenery to improve the quality of the living spaces."

Currently there are several government projects focusing on building more parks, nature reserves and open spaces. However, creating more open spaces for Singapore residents does not stop at just adding green.

"We also enhance the liveability of our city by making it congestion free. We realized upfront that extensive car usage is not sustainable in a land scarce city," said Mr Mah. So far, Singapore has invested S$40 billion to increase the length of Singapore's urban rail network by 50 per cent in 2020 and implemented a vehicle quota system as well as road pricing in which drivers pay as they drive.

"We plan for high density residential and commercial uses at key public transport nodes to encourage greater use of public transport." Mr Mah also said employment centres and industries will be decentralised in order to bring jobs closer to homes and reduce commuting times.

Bangkok – The Most Liberated Asian City

Posted in : Reviews, Traveling Info

(added 13 days ago)

Bangkok – The Most Liberated Asian CityI had been hearing about Bangkok since time immemorial. I had heard people blabbering about the time they had spent in this amazing city in the South East Asia. The stories I had heard and the information I got from the internet created an image of the careless and flamboyant city and boy I found Bangkok exactly like that. Very recently I have a got a chance to visit this beautiful city, thanks to a friend who was getting married and we planned his bachelor's party here in Bangkok. The moment we step out from our flights to bangkok, the city in front of me was exactly similar as I thought of.

We came out of the Suvarnabhumi airport of Bangkok at around 11 in the morning. The airport has a mythological Indian ambience with a huge sculpture of Samudra Manthan from Hindu Mythology. We came out of the airport and started looking for a taxi. Hiring a taxi at the airport was an experience in itself not very different from what you may have in Mumbai or in Delhi, the same sort of crowd and hustles. We booked a taxi and reached our hotel in around forty minutes. Even though it was not the peak traffic hours in Bangkok, still the road was filled with cars and public transports. People were mostly tourists catching a glimpse of Thailand's everyday life.

We reached our hotel, Prince Palace, in another hour where we had two suits booked. The hotel was good with decent rooms. This hotel is situated near the downtown and has a number of places to visit in the vicinity. We were tired because of an early morning flight so we decided to skip lunch and take rest for an hour or so before hitting the road and start our voyage for a fun filled 7 days.

We slept for the next three hours and woke up with a strong feeling of hunger. We had an option to call our room service and get something delivered quickly but we decided to move out of our rooms and explore the nearby market for some local delicacies. We found a small restaurant in the market with a traditional Thai menu and decided to take our meal there while finalizing our plans for the next 7 days in Thailand.

The seven days we spent in Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket were the best in our lives. It was a recreational and transformational experience we had in Bangkok. The trip was filled with fun which started since the landing of our cheap flights to Bangkok. The tour to the city of Bangkok is highly recommended to all young bachelors. I will tell my experience of Thailand in greater detail in the coming articles.

The Newest Luxury Hotel Brand Travelers Need To Know: Sofitel?

Posted in : Hotels

(added 15 days ago)

The Newest Luxury Hotel Brand Travelers Need To Know SofitelNearly 50 years ago the first Sofitel hotel opened in Strasbourg France, and in the ensuing half century, the company went global. Amassing over 200 hotels worldwide, from Asia to the States, South America to Australia, more than Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton combined, Sofitel became a big hotel group, chain, or company, yet it never managed to become a brand, at least not in the U.S. where few travelers knew it and fewer knew much about it.

That’s about to change.

First a tiny bit of history: Sofitel was acquired by Accor, another French hotel group, in the late Nineties. Accor is very large, and owns or manages somewhere in the neighborhood of 4,500 hotels under more than a dozen brand names (Mercure, Ibis, Novotel, etc.) from budget to luxury in over 90 countries around the globe. At first, under Accor, the Sofitel brand got even cloudier, a catch all for hotels, many in France, operating under a common name but often lacking any common characteristics. I have been traveling very frequently and writing on travel around the globe for over 15 years, and have stayed in hundreds of hotels from independents to chains, large and small, and amazingly I had never stayed at a Sofitel until recently. Yet I noticed that they were all over the place, especially in markets lacking other name brand hotels, but also in some surprisingly popular destinations like New York, Chicago and London. If you asked me to describe Sofitel a year ago, about the best I could do would have been “a French chain with a lot of hotels in cities big and small.”

So what has changed?

In 2007 Accor brought in longtime hotel industry veteran COO Robert-Gaymer Jones to revitalize and reposition the brand, and he was subsequently promoted to CEO last year. I had occasion to chat with him last fall at the Virtuoso travel conference in Las Vegas (Virtuoso is the leading global consortium of high-end expert travel agencies for luxury-seeking customers, and I wrote about the group in my series on Why You Need a Travel Agent, Parts One and Two).

Jones quickly de-flagged nearly half of the Sofitel properties, cherry picking the best of the bunch and dropping the tally to just 120 hotels and resorts, while setting out to improve these even more. “Four years ago, Accor, our parent, had a bunch of hotels they called Sofitel but it was not really a brand. They had a lot of great hotels, but also a lot of not so great ones. They brought me in to build a luxury brand and we went from 206 to 120 and put in new standards.”

To implement improved standards competitive with other top tier brands, he assembled a new management team hiring veterans from the world’s best run hotel companies, “Four Seasons, Peninsula, Shangri La, as we are repositioning the brand, developing and implementing the standards. Our strategy and tagline are ‘Be Magnifique.” For differentiation, Jones is returning to the company’s roots and emphasizing its “Frenchness.” “We are the only global luxury chain that is French, so we are really focusing on food and beverage, bringing in chefs and sommeliers with Michelin-starred backgrounds, using French designers, but not any French designers, only the top ones.”

Like Hyatt, Starwood, Marriott and Hilton, Sofitel has also stratified itself into three tiers with two new brands, the highest being Sofitel Legends, their flagship palace properties, such as the Metropolitan Hanoi, Grand Amsterdam and the recently opened Old Cataract in Aswan, Egypt. SO is their hip or boutique brand, with an urban and fashion flavor marketed at an affluent younger clientele, with properties in destinations like Mauritius and Bangkok. The new Bangkok SO property is built in a series of 4-story blocks, each designed differently and themed (wood, glass, metal, etc.) and upon booking, guests are encouraged to reserve a room in the block that suits their taste and personality.

So what does all this mean to the luxury traveler?

The changes have had an immediate impact, and as Jones told trade publication Travel Weekly in an interview, new customers, especially women, are flocking to the rejuvenated hotels. “We’ve seen the mix of clients change dramatically. We have become an extremely female-friendly hotel. The female traveler appreciates the focus on design and the details like flowers. …There are no big bars and lobbies. You don’t see a bunch of convention guys walking past you.”
